How Acupuncture Supports Stress and Anxiety

Calming the nervous system. When we are under prolonged stress, the body tends to stay in “fight or flight” mode. Acupuncture encourages a shift toward the “rest and digest” side of the nervous system, and many clients describe their sessions as deeply settling.

Sleep and insomnia. Stress and anxiety often show up as trouble falling asleep, waking through the night, or waking unrefreshed. Acupuncture is commonly used to support more restful sleep, and your acupuncturist may also suggest sleep habits to support your treatment at home.

Physical signs of stress. Tension headaches, a tight neck and shoulders, jaw clenching, digestive upset and fatigue are all common. Acupuncture looks at these patterns together, and it pairs well with massage therapy in Leaside for muscular tension.

Burnout and low energy. Long periods of high demand at work or home can leave you feeling depleted. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, treatment for burnout focuses on restoring balance and energy over a course of sessions.

Acupuncture Alongside Other Care

Acupuncture can be one part of your support for anxiety and stress. It works well alongside talk therapy, and Myocare also offers psychotherapy. If you are under the care of a doctor or taking medication for anxiety, continue with that care and let your acupuncturist know.

If you are in crisis, please contact your doctor, call or text 988, or go to your nearest emergency department.

What to Expect at Your First Appointment

The intake. Your first visit begins with an intake covering what you are experiencing, your sleep, digestion, energy, and health history. Your acupuncturist may also look at your tongue and take your pulse, both of which inform a Traditional Chinese Medicine assessment.

The treatment. Acupuncture needles are very fine, and most people feel only a brief pressure or mild tingling on insertion. Needles are usually retained for 20 to 30 minutes while you rest in a quiet room, and many clients find it one of the most relaxing hours of their week.

How often. Many people start with weekly sessions, then space them out as they settle. Your acupuncturist will suggest a plan and review it with you as you go.
