Although on our website, we distinguish between different massage types and modalities, at MyoCare, we specialize in developing massage treatments that will focus on each individual client’s issues. This means our RMTs (Registered Massage Therapists) will most likely perform various hands-on techniques and massage modalities to help you achieve your health-related goals. However, this can sometimes lead to confusion when people try to book their appointments with us as they are not 100% sure which type of treatment they should choose.

To help you understand how each of our massage therapies work, we have put together a handbook to our massage treatments. In this handbook, we have explained all of our treatments and the benefits they provide. Keep reading to see how to choose the ideal massage for your specific needs.

1. Massage Therapy Treatments
All our therapists are RMTs and can perform very effective massage therapy treatments. This modality is excellent for acute injuries and chronic issues alike. It is also the best treatment to book if you are unsure of what you need during your first session with us. Our RMTs are trained to assess what type of treatment you need and develop and perform a hands-on massage treatment for you based on this assessment.

When it comes to massage therapy, we offer different lengths of treatment to choose from. We strongly suggest at least sixty minutes for your first visit. That way, the therapist will have time to talk with you, do a short assessment, and perform treatment simultaneously. Afterwards, your RMT will suggest a time length for your following visits. If you’re experiencing an issue in a single area, thirty to forty-five minutes of massage therapy is sufficient. On the other hand, if there are multiple factors at play causing your issues, choosing a sixty to ninety-minute long massage will be beneficial.

2. Myofascial Release
Myofascial Release is a hands-on technique that can vary from a very light touch to a deep aggressive treatment. During Myofascial therapy, the therapist works with the connective tissues that wrap around all your muscles, organs, bones, and nerves. This tissue is called Fascia. It is also called connective tissue because it connects everything together and gives you shape.

During a Myofascial treatment, your RMT will search out areas where this Fascia is dehydrated and restricted. These restrictions can cause tightness, limited movement, pain, and difficulty in holding proper posture locally. If the Fascia is affected in one area of the body, it can cause issues elsewhere because Fascia is interconnected throughout the body. By finding and releasing the restriction, the therapist can return your body’s Fascia to its healthy pliable state. In this state, it will do its job properly and not cause painful tightness or restriction in movement.

The Myofascial Release treatment is performed slowly and with a little bit of lotion, not oil. It feels more like your tissues are being stretched as opposed to a massage where the technique involves gliding over your muscles. We do not suggest this type of treatment for acute injuries as it’s more useful in chronic issues. A sixty-minute treatment is strongly recommended as the technique is slow, and Fascia is globally connected throughout the body. This means that the RMT may have to work on several areas in one session.

3. Pregnancy or Prenatal Massage
Prenatal massage is pretty self-explanatory. This treatment is suggested for women in any phase of their pregnancy. During the first trimester, the mother to be will be lying on her stomach like usual. The RMT will avoid working her low back and abdominal area during this phase of the pregnancy. For the second and third trimester, the mother to be will be lying on her side, surrounded by supporting pillows. A pregnancy massage can be either a full-body maintenance treatment or focused on a specific issue. We suggest a forty-five to sixty-minute long pregnancy massages for better relief from pain and muscle strains.

4. Neuromuscular Acupuncture
The focus of Neuromuscular acupuncture is to use acupuncture needles to stimulate or relax your nervous system and help reduce pain, tightness, weakness, or dysfunction in your muscles and Fascia. Neuromuscular acupuncture can be used in acute or chronic issues. At Myocare, Neuromuscular acupuncture is combined with a massage therapy treatment. This means you get two effective treatments in one session! We suggest a minimum of sixty minutes for this type of treatment.

5. Shiatsu
A Shiatsu massage is similar to traditional Chinese acupuncture as it looks to stimulate and balance meridians throughout the body. But for this massage, the therapist uses their elbows, fingers, or thumbs to apply pressure on the acupuncture points. This treatment is performed on top of loose clothing and can be used for relaxation or boosting your overall wellness. We suggest a sixty-minute appointment for your first visit and don’t forget to wear comfortable clothes.

How should you prepare for our services?

1. Carry your health insurance details
As our therapists are registered professionals, all our treatments are covered by most extended health insurance plans. This means that you can apply for your medical insurance at the time of payment. Make sure that you speak to our specialists for more details about this.

2. Fill up your forms at home
At Myocare, we try and make things as easy as possible for you. This is why we send you all the necessary forms you need to fill out via email. That way, you can do it before you arrive for your appointment. These forms are mandatory, as we are regulated health professionals, and if you forget to fill them out at home before the appointment, you will need to fill them out at the office, which may cut into your appointment time.

3. Make sure you’re on time for your appointment
We are an appointment-based massage therapy center and are usually booked back to back with clients, so you mustn’t arrive late for your treatment. If you are late, we may have to shorten your treatment as we have another client coming in right after you. It is also important to note that your appointment time (for example, sixty minutes) includes the time spent talking with the therapist, the assessment, treatment, and home care.
