What is Acupuncture?
PLEASE NOTE THESE TREATMENTS ARE BILLED UNDER REGISTERED MASSAGE THERAPY NOT ACUPUNCTURE.
Acupuncture originated in Traditional Chinese Medicine, and involves inserting thin, filiform needles into specific locations/points of the body to achieve widespread therapeutic effects. Acupuncture has recently gained popularity within western health care and research due to the incredible benefits it shows for pain management. It is has even been used as a safe and effective alternative to medications or surgery. It is for these reasons that health care practitioners including doctors, physiotherapists and massage therapists are increasingly choosing this modality to help their clients.
Who can provide Acupuncture?
In Ontario, Registered Massage Therapists (RMTs) can safely include acupuncture in their treatments once they have completed additional training and certification. As RMT's, we are able to use acupuncture as a tool that complements traditional massage therapy to treat what is in our scope of practice, which includes pain or dysfunction of muscles, nerves, ligaments and joints of the body.
At Myocare, three of our Registered Massage Therapists, Madhvi Aggarwal and Cecilia Garrison, and Christopher Hollick have completed the McMaster University Contemporary Medical Acupuncture Program Certificate Program and are fully certified to provide safe and effective acupuncture.
Since these treatments are performed by a Registered Massage Therapist, they are billed as Massage Therapy sessions and are covered by Massage Therapy benefits, NOT acupuncture.
What is a 'Acupuncture with Massage' treatment like?
This treatment combines the traditional method of acupuncture with Western science and current understanding of the nervous system. This method targets specific nerves in the body with or without the use of electrical stimulation. Since our brain uses electrical impulses to communicate with our body, this method is a very effective tool to help our system manage pain and dysfunction, primarily through the release of neurotransmitters. In some cases, acupuncture has also been shown to improve sleep, help reduce anxiety and improve overall sense of wellbeing.
A Acupuncture/ Massage Treatment will begin with a complete health history form to begin the conversation between you and your Massage Therapist; addressing past health challenges, injuries and surgeries as well as describing your current symptoms with detail. It is important to discuss current medications and health conditions as this will help us create the safest and most effective treatment for you. Next, an individualized assessment of your muscles or joints will be completed as we create a treatment just for you, based on the findings.
(Please wear loose fitting clothing that allows you full movement during the assessment).
All treatments will include massage techniques as well as acupuncture with or without electrical stimulation, depending on your specific needs. The therapist will choose a number of specific points to insert the needles. Most needles are left in for 5-20 minutes depending on your tolerance and goals. Once the needles are removed it is likely that we will massage the same region as well. It is also likely that your treatment will include reassessing your body to gage how your body responded to the treatment, and to determine the next stages/sessions. Typically multiple sessions are done over a few weeks, depending on the severity of your symptoms, and how quickly your system responds to the treatment. Your therapist will work with you to create a tailored treatment plan that you are comfortable with.
These sessions are created to empower you to take health into your own hands, and to ensure we work together to help achieve the results you are seeking.
Who can benefit from this treatment?
There is great scientific evidence for acupuncture's effectiveness for a wide variety of presentations.
- It has been shown to help decrease and manage acute and chronic pain,
- improve function and mobility of the joints.
- We can treat old injuries, such as sprains, tears, surgical scars, even if they happened many years ago.
- chronic pain,
- jaw dysfunction,
- nerve pain
- those looking to relax or speed the recovery process.
Feel free to contact us to discuss whether this is the right treatment for you. Not sure if you want to commit to a full treatment? Just book with Madhvi, Cecilia, or Chris for a massage treatment and let them know you are interested in Acupuncture. They will happily try a couple of needles to determine if Acupuncture is right for you.

Pregnancy Massage in Toronto is becoming more and more popular. It is a excellent way to ease through the changes that occur in the body during pregnancy.
As the pregnancy progresses these changes become more obvious and in some cases can be stressful, uncomfortable and even painful. Pregnancy Massage helps alleviate muscle tension, nerve compression and stress related to these body changes so that the expecting mother can enjoy the wonderful experience of carrying a child.
Changes that occur in the body throughout pregnancy
In the earlier stages of the pregnancy these changes are very small and in some cases cannot even be felt by the mother. Most of the changes felt are usually hormonal; that can often cause, fatigue, irritability, nausea and water retention. As the fetus starts to grow, the body must change in order to support it and make room. The body allows these changes to occur with the help of a hormone which is released later in the pregnancy. This hormone is called Relaxin and its job is to circulate in the body and cause all the ligament in the body to become a bit more relaxed. This is important because as the baby grown the ribs need to shift and flare out and the pelvis needs to widen to make room. Although these changes are natural and necessary, they can also cause mild to moderate muscle and joint discomfort. As the ligaments loosen and the joints become more unstable, there is a significant increase in stress placed on the muscles. This increase in stress can cause muscular aches and pains which can be easily alleviated with pregnancy massage.
As the uterus grows, the posture of the mother to be will progressively change along with it. Normal postural changes during pregnancy are:
- An increase in the lordotic curve (curve in the low back). This can lead to joint compression and muscular tension in the lower back, causing pain and discomfort.
- The pelvis will drop forward and widen, increasing the strain on the muscles of the legs, hips and feet.
- The ligaments along the Anterior and posterior aspect of the spine as well as the ligaments of the pelvis will stretch out, predisposing the mother to ligaments sprains.
- The shoulders will round forward causing a tightening of the pecs and over stretching the mid back muscles. This can cause pain between the shoulder blades and tightness in the chest.
- The head starts to rest in a more forward position, leading to neck and shoulder pain.
- The abdominal muscles stretch out and in some cases separate. This causes the muscles of the back to have to work way more to stabilize the spine.
Although these changes are completely normal and will happen to every woman throughout their pregnancy, they can be uncomfortable and in some cases quite painful. Pregnancy or Prenatal Massage, not only helps decrease muscular tension and pain, but can also prevent excessive changes to occur, helping you stay as straight and stable as possible. A qualified RMT can also give you some strengthening exercises to help stabilize the body as much as possible) in order to prevent injury and pain.
Due to hormonal changes, increase in blood pressure and lack of mobility, fluid retention can occur throughout the pregnancy. In most cases, this presents as a puffiness in the hands, feet and legs. This puffiness can cause mild to moderate discomfort and in come cases can even compress nerves. This can lead to conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, causing numbness in the hands and arms. Pregnancy Massage can help drain out the stagnant fluid by pushing it back towards the heart and allowing it to be re-circulated and peed out.
As you know, these are just a few example of the changes that occur in your body during pregnancy. This gives you a better understanding on how massage therapy can help and support you through these changes.
How is Prenatal Massage performed?
The massage is performed with the mother- to- be laying on her side, with pillows appropriately placed to help support the body and increase relaxation. Most of the treatment is performed with the mother laying on the left side, with a short time spend laying on the right. ( so we can get to the left shoulder and neck). She is then asked to roll onto her back. In this position we place several pillows under the back, so that she is in a semi-seated position. In this position a small towel roll is placed under the right hip to shift the baby off the major vein that returns blood to the heart. The arms, neck and legs can be treated in this position. Full body treatments are generally recommended, but the treatments can also be more focused depending on needs of each individual client. We recommend a 45 or 60 minute treatment in order to get full benefit from the prenatal massage.
Post Pregnancy Massage
Massage is also beneficial after delivery. It is a excellent way to help return the body back to its natural state. It also helps alleviate the upper back and neck stiffness that often accompanies breast feeding. We at MyoCare RMT, also understand that it is difficult to sneak away when you have a new born, so we welcome you to bring along your baby to the treatment. Our treatment rooms are large enough so that he or she can rest next to you as you receive your treatment.

.Shiatsu, Japanese for finger pressure, is a form of bodywork based on the theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Shiatsu therefore shares much of its background theory with acupuncture and incorporates western medicine principles of anatomy, physiology and pathology. In shiatsu, no needles are used; instead, pressure is applied to the body on specific points and along the body’s energetic meridians or pathways. Pressure can be applied by the therapist’s thumbs, palms, elbows or knees moving from one point to another in a rhythmic sequence and gentle guided stretches are often incorporated.
Shiatsu therapy is known to reduce stress, boost the immune system, aid with digestive issues, and fatigue and enhance physical vitality and emotional well-being. It is performed through loose, comfortable clothing and no oils are used, so please remember to bring a pair of loose pants/shorts and a shirt to your next treatment.

Massage Therapy for Jaw Pain - Toronto RMT
MASSAGE THERAPY FOR JAW PAIN
Few people know that massage therapy is actually quite effective in relieving symptoms from TMJ issues. Working as a Toronto RMT for over 14 years I have surprised many clients with the fact that massage therapy for jaw pain can help relieve the pain, tension or popping sound happening in their TMJ.
Causes of TMJ Issues
There a many causes of TMJ (temperomandibular joint) issues. This is why it is important to get properly assessed before receiving treatment.
- Altered dentition: The position of your teeth can cause major issues in your TMJ. If the teeth are not properly aligned, it will alter the ability of the jaw to open and close properly. It also alters the resting position of the joint when your mouth is closed. It is important to get regular check ups from your dentist, and speak to them about your jaw issues. They may suggest orthodontics to properly align the jaw and teeth.
How massage can help
In this case, massage therapy cannot fix the problem, but it can be quite successful in alieviating the symptoms. Proper TMJ massage therapy treatments can decrease muscle tension, and imbalances. It can also be used to mobilize a stiff joint, decreasing popping in the joint and increasing mobility. Because orthodontics is the only way to really fix the problem, regular massage therapy treatment will be necessary to keep your symptoms at bay.
- Teeth clenching: Most people are not aware that they are clenching their teeth. This is because most of the time it is occurring while we sleep. It is however not limited to night time. Some people clench their teeth all day long without noticing. ( Check to see if you are clenching right now. the normal resting position of the Jaw is tongue on the roof of your mouth, lips closed, and teeth apart. If your teeth are touching while you are resting, then you are clenching your jaw) Clenching of the Jaw is usually stressed related. It then becomes a habit, that your nervous system has a hard time breaking.
How massage therapy can Help
Since Jaw clenching is usually stress related, massage therapy is a excellent way to help. Massage therapy relaxation massage has been proven to help shut down the stress response ( fight or Flight) and trigger relaxation ( Rest and Digest). By breaking the stress cycle, night and day jaw clenching will decrease. Proper TMJ massage treatments are also used to relieve the tension in the muscles of the jaw to help decrease pain, discomfort, and increase opening of the mouth.
- Improper posture: Improper posture can also cause the muscles of the Jaw to tighten. Sometimes they tighten on both sides, and sometimes they are affected 1 side more than the other. The Jaw has its own center of gravity. When the body is properly aligned the jaw is perfectly balanced, and Jaw center of gravity runs directly through the TMJ. In this position the muscles of the Jaw barely have to work to keep the mouth closed when at rest. As posture is altered, and the neck and head is pushed forward this center of gravity is changed. This makes the muscles have to work harder to keep the mouth closed at rest, and eventually they start to get overworked and tight. Forward head posture also causes some of the muscles of the neck and Jaw to pull your jaw out of alignment, again making the muscles of the jaw work harder to oppose them. Certain, less common postures, such as scoliosis, can cause one side of your jaw to be altered. This can lead to more tension and even popping on one side of the TMJ.
How massage therapy can help
Massage therapy is very successful in treating postural dysfunctions, and re-aligning the body. In combination with proper home care exercises massage therapy can usually fix, or significantly improve postural issues. By fixing the deviations there will be less stress on the TMJ muscles, allowing them to heal and relax. With a series of Proper TMJ massage therapy treatments, the muscles of the Jaw can be release, and joints mobilized to decrease tension, and popping.
What is popping in my Jaw?
The popping sound that occasionally occurs in your jaw is most often a muscle, called the lateral pterygoid, pulling the small disc in your Jaw joint over a bony prominence. when this muscle gets really tight it will shorten and pull the disc anteriorly over a sticky outy bone piece of your Jaw bone when you open your mouth. This creates a pop noise. In most cases, when you close your mouth the disc goes back into place. There are however times when the disc is pulled to far forward and get stuck there. This causes the jaw to be locked open. A really scary and painful thing to go through. As the disc is pulled forward, it stretches the ligaments that are supposed to hold it in place, making the disc hypermobile
Massage therapy can help loosen the lateral pterygoid so that it doesen’t pull on the disc as much. This will reduce the disc displacement and the popping noise.
- Direct blow to the jaw: A direct blow to the jaw, commonly seen in sports or motor vehicle accidents, can cause the muscles of the jaw to tighten and go into spasm. This is caused by the trauma, inflammation and muscle guarding in response to and acute injury.
How massage therapy can help
Massage therapy can gently work the muscles of the jaw, and the TMJ heals. This will help decrease muscle tension and pain, as well as increase circulation to help decrease inflammation and speed up healing.
Massage therapy for jaw pain :What to expect during a massage therapy TMJ treatment?
Most massage therapy TMJ treatments will begin with a short interview. Your RMT will ask you questions about your jaw, and it’s discomfort. She/he will then perform a short assessment, starting with checking out your posture. (remember postural deviation will affect your Jaw) Your RMT will then ask you to open and close your mouth, move it side to side, and usually feel around your TMJ and face.
The massage that follows will usually consist of addressing the postural issues, stress reduction, and decreasing the tension of the muscles of the neck and scalp.
He/She will then start working on the muscles of the Jaw on the outside of the mouth. They are located in your cheek area, and above your temples and ears. once these muscles are loosened, your RMT will then put on gloves and go work the muscles of mastication from the inside of your mouth. Don’t worry, they will not be working inside your teeth. They will be working the area inside your cheek, but outside of your teeth. The treatment is not painful, and a reduction in symptoms are usually felt immediately. Your RMT can even teach you how to massage this area yourself, so you can do it throughout the day.
massage therapy for jaw pain can quickly help alleviate your Jaw pain, and in some cases prevent them from coming back. All Toronto RMT’s at Myocare RMT are trained in TMJ massage therapy treatments. If you have any questions before booking your treatment do not hesitate to contact us.
Myofascial Release is a method of treatment that focuses on the connective tissue covering that wraps around the muscles. (Think of Saran Wrap around your muscles) Fascia is extremely strong and when this tissue becomes tight and restricted, it can limit movement and cause pain. Since fascia is extremely strong it can also hold your body in improper positions, causing posture issues. These posture issues can cause a lot of joint and muscle pain, and can even lead to degeneration and chronic issues.
Fascia is a very important part of the body, and it has three layers starting with the superficial fascia directly under the skin, the second layer wraps around all your muscles, muscle fibers, tendons, and creates ligaments. The third layer is the subserous fascia, deep inside the body which wraps around and separates all our organs. Although we divide the fascia into layers, they are actually, all interconnected. This means an issue in any of the layers, can have a ripple effect, and start causing issues all over the body.
Restrictions and adherences can develop in any of the fascial layers. These restrictions can be caused by a wide variety of things:
- Brute injury to an area will cause fascial restrictions to develop.
- Being static in a certain position for a long time,( such as sitting at a computer all day, everyday, or bad posture)
- Being dehydrated ( 70% of the water in your body is stored in your fascia. This water helps keep all the fibers in the fascia apart so they don’t stick together and create restrictions
These are just a few examples of common causes of fascial restrictions.
Quality Myofascial Release in Toronto
Myofascial release helps stretch out this tissue in order to increase mobility and decrease pain. Myofascial release also helps restore proper posture, alignment and can even help mobilize scar tissue from surgery or injury.
The technique is performed with very little lotion or cream in order to properly stretch and lengthen the Fascia. The techniques feel more like a stretching of the skin, as opposed to the gliding sensation you get with a massage. They are performed very slowly, in order to stretch out the fascial restrictions, and in most cases people find it very relaxing. Often, immediate results are felt after just one treatment.
Depending on the severity of the restrictions, and how wide spread the effects are, the massage therapist will have to develop a treatment plan. This treatment plan will consist of consecutive myofascial release treatments that will address various parts of the body. ( Remember fascia is all interconnected. For example, a foot issue can effect your hip or even your neck) Simple exercises are often given as homecare to help maintain the fascia, and fix posture in between treatments.
A few of our Massage Therapists, Melanie Gallant RMT, Nirankar Khalsa RMT, and Susan Perreira RMT are highly trained in Myofascial Release and can either provide full Myofascial Treatments or integrate the techniques into any massage treatment.
For more information about Fascia check out this great video by Thomas Myers, which is a guru in the myofascial release world.
