What is Acupuncture?

PLEASE NOTE THESE TREATMENTS ARE BILLED UNDER REGISTERED MASSAGE THERAPY NOT ACUPUNCTURE.

Acupuncture originated in Traditional Chinese Medicine, and involves inserting thin, filiform needles into specific locations/points of the body to achieve widespread therapeutic effects. Acupuncture has recently gained popularity within western health care and research due to the incredible benefits it shows for pain management. It is has even been used as a safe and effective alternative to medications or surgery. It is for these reasons that health care practitioners including doctors, physiotherapists and massage therapists are increasingly choosing this modality to help their clients.

Who can provide Acupuncture?

In Ontario, Registered Massage Therapists (RMTs) can safely include acupuncture in their treatments once they have completed additional training and certification. As RMT's, we are able to use acupuncture as a tool that complements traditional massage therapy to treat what is in our scope of practice, which includes pain or dysfunction of muscles, nerves, ligaments and joints of the body.

At Myocare, three of our Registered Massage Therapists, Madhvi Aggarwal and Cecilia Garrison, and Christopher Hollick have completed the McMaster University Contemporary Medical Acupuncture Program Certificate Program and are fully certified to provide safe and effective acupuncture.

Since these treatments are performed by a Registered Massage Therapist, they are billed as Massage Therapy sessions and are covered by Massage Therapy benefits, NOT acupuncture.

What is a 'Acupuncture with Massage' treatment like?

This treatment combines the traditional method of acupuncture with Western science and current understanding of the nervous system. This method targets specific nerves in the body with or without the use of electrical stimulation. Since our brain uses electrical impulses to communicate with our body, this method is a very effective tool to help our system manage pain and dysfunction, primarily through the release of neurotransmitters. In some cases, acupuncture has also been shown to improve sleep, help reduce anxiety and improve overall sense of wellbeing.

A Acupuncture/ Massage Treatment will begin with a complete health history form to begin the conversation between you and your Massage Therapist; addressing past health challenges, injuries and surgeries as well as describing your current symptoms with detail. It is important to discuss current medications and health conditions as this will help us create the safest and most effective treatment for you. Next, an individualized assessment of your muscles or joints will be completed as we create a treatment just for you, based on the findings.

(Please wear loose fitting clothing that allows you full movement during the assessment).

All treatments will include massage techniques as well as acupuncture with or without electrical stimulation, depending on your specific needs. The therapist will choose a number of specific points to insert the needles. Most needles are left in for 5-20 minutes depending on your tolerance and goals. Once the needles are removed it is likely that we will massage the same region as well. It is also likely that your treatment will include reassessing your body to gage how your body responded to the treatment, and to determine the next stages/sessions. Typically multiple sessions are done over a few weeks, depending on the severity of your symptoms, and how quickly your system responds to the treatment. Your therapist will work with you to create a tailored treatment plan that you are comfortable with.

These sessions are created to empower you to take health into your own hands, and to ensure we work together to help achieve the results you are seeking.
